Considerations
Pros
Cons
Pros
- LDPE is widely used in many different packaging styles and sectors and is a highly recyclable material.
- It may be utilized in a wide variety of package formats and is incredibly strong and reasonably priced.
- Both high and low barrier structures are available.
- Much superior to the majority of multi-material laminates that are not recyclable
Cons
- Made from virgin petrochemical materials
- More cost-effective than most bioplastic alternatives to flexible packaging
- Recycling soft plastic is difficult. This material must either enter a drop-off soft plastics collecting stream, which is small but expanding quickly, or a dedicated polyethylene stream (#2 or #4).
- Doesn’t contribute meaningfully in moving towards a circular economy but it’s a starting point
